Step 5: Test if she can locate the keys.
Turn it into a game:
Can you press Fa? How about La? Where’s Mi?
Yay! If she can already identify those, Hooray!
You can now play music! 🙂
Step 6: Choose a favorite nursery rhyme and SING THE NOTES while you press them.
I recommend Twinkle Twinkle as it has an easy pattern.
do do sol sol la la sol
Twinkle twinkle little star
Do it slow. If she recognizes the tune, you will immediately see a reaction. It is a magical moment to their ears.
“Do you want to try it? I’ll sing the notes and you can press the keys.”
Again, do it slow. You will be amazed that they’ll practice this on their own later on.
Step 7: Teach line by line.
After a few days, introduce the next line of the song by singing the notes again and not the actual lyrics.
fa fa mi mi re re do
How I wonder what you are
When she has mastered that, connect the 1st pattern to the 2nd pattern.
do do sol sol la la sol
Twinkle twinkle little star
fa fa mi mi re re do
How I wonder what you are
At this point, your child would most likely feel a sense of accomplishment and would ask to go on.
You can now introduce the 3rd pattern, which is:
Sol sol fa fa mi mi re
Up above the world so high
Sol sol fa fa mi mi re
Like a diamond in the sky
Give it a few days, depending on your child’s cues and then do the 1st and 2nd pattern again to end the song.
do do sol sol la la sol
Twinkle twinkle little star
fa fa mi mi re re do
How I wonder what you are
Now connect them all together and you have just taught your child her 1st piano piece!
Here’s how it turned out for us.
If your child has memorized the sequence by heart, you can now sing it using the correct lyrics instead of singing the notes.
As you do this, give yourself a tap on the shoulder because you have just laid a musical foundation should your child wish to pursue this field.
Congratulations!
Your possibilities are now endless! You can now learn as many songs as you like. →
